About me

As an author and ghostwriter I work under many names, but Grahame Smith runs the admin.

I should start with where I am now, rather than the road taken to get here. Writing is now my full-time occupation, although it’s always played an important role at different stages of my career. I specialise in writing historical and fantasy fiction.

Author

Published under my pen name of Grahame Fleming, “The Blood of the Bear“ is a humorous retelling of the story of King Arthur, a novel combining my passions of history and comedy, wrapped up in convenient Kindle and paperback formats.

Scriptwriter

I have a long history of working in the digital media industry, writing interactive scripts and programming on a wide variety of projects.

I’ve worked as a developer for content management systems, ecommerce, mobile, and single-page applications (apps that run in your web browser).

I’m always looking for new ways to combine writing text and writing code, so I’m working on a project for Alexa smart speakers. I’m aiming to write stories that take full advantage of the personalised user responses that the technology is capable of. A new way for the ‘player’ to take part in the story.

I’ll post progress reports on this site as I proceed. If you want to follow how I get on, then just subscribe to be kept up to date.

Ghostwriter

Last but not least, ghostwriting takes up most of my time. There’s a page on this site dedicated to it, if it’s something you’re considering.

I enjoy working with customers to develop their ideas and bring their plans to fruition. These are books I would never have written if I was just following my own creative journey. It has stretched me as a writer, and along the way I’ve met many interesting people with inspiring stories to tell.

It's more common for ghostwritten books to focus on memoirs, but sometimes customers choose to dramatise their life stories for more general appeal and a potentially larger audience.

In these situations, my approach of blending personal accounts into a story that reflects real-world events, and techniques drawn from fiction writing, can create added levels of interest. Think of it as memoirs with cliffhangers, and you'll start to get the idea.

The Archives

Going back to the beginning? I’ve always worked in the creative industries, starting out with theatre, then a few years working for a commercial graphic design company. It was during that time that I discovered computers and programming, and that went on to define much of my career.

From the very outset I worked in what used to be described as, multimedia. I built a full-time career out of scriptwriting and programming on projects for education, marketing, and training. I was there when the internet arrived and have worked on hundreds of websites over the years.

In the early 2010s I wrote and devised content to promote independent music from Japan

During my career, I’ve been fortunate to work for companies in the U.K., Europe, the U.S., and Japan, and now the international work continues with ghostwriting clients from across four continents ...which means I can be on Zoom calls at any time of the day!

To finish on a much overused phrase, “That’s the story so far”.
